Proto Academy is a local community experiment. This site is updated as time allows and may not always reflect the latest information.
Proto Academy is a simple idea:
Fort Atkinson is full of people with good ideas — but most community members don’t have a clear path to turn those ideas into real projects. Proto Academy exists to change that.
We’re building a public, open-access space where anyone can:
explore local initiatives
learn how to start or support a project
connect with others who want to make Fort Atkinson stronger
access tools, templates, and guides for community-led action
Proto Academy is not a business, not a political group, and not tied to any single organization.
It’s a prototype learning hub designed to help residents experiment, collaborate, and build things that matter.
Proto Academy focuses on three core functions:
We highlight topics that affect Fort Atkinson — from land use to youth engagement to downtown revitalization — and present them in a clear, accessible way.
Each initiative page includes:
background information
community perspectives
practical steps for getting involved
starter guides for launching a project
examples of what similar communities have done
Anyone can propose an idea.
Anyone can start something small.
Proto Academy helps you figure out how.
Because everything starts as a prototype.
A prototype:
doesn’t need to be perfect
doesn’t need permission
doesn’t require a committee
just needs a first step
Proto Academy is a place where first steps are encouraged, supported, and celebrated.
These pages are living documents — updated as the community learns, debates, and experiments.
Fort Atkinson is seeing rapid growth in solar development. Many residents support renewable energy but are concerned about aesthetics, land use, and long-term impact.
This initiative explores alternatives such as community-backed land leases, local ownership models, and landscape-integrated design.
As new topics emerge, Proto Academy will publish additional pages to help residents understand the issue and take action.
You don’t need experience.
You don’t need a title.
You don’t need to “join” anything.
You can:
read an initiative page
share your perspective
volunteer to help
start a micro-project
propose a new topic
or simply stay informed
Proto Academy is here to make community action easier, clearer, and more accessible.
A Fort Atkinson where:
residents feel empowered to shape their town
good ideas don’t die in comment sections
projects start small and grow through collaboration
learning and doing happen side by side
Proto Academy is an experiment — a prototype — in what a community can build when it has the tools.
